in modern times it is important to get the correct styling and modernisation to achieve the best value for your home.the key to this is getting the colours and overall styling right. therefore when choosing your flooring, wall coverings and skirting boards, you need to go for a design that will fit with the rest of the décor, and not just something off the shelf. very recently, there have been a wide range of new skirting boards coming to market from innovative companies, offering you almost as much choice with your wooden finishings as with your wallpaper or your curtains. choosing the wood is a large part of making the decision on your skirtings. pine skirting boards

if you want a low cost option, that you can paint readily in different colours, then mdf skirting is your best option. maple hardwood as used in snooker cues can also be used for maple skirting boards, or even oak skirting, walnut skirting or other hardwoods. an expensive look can be obtained by using hardwood skirting of various varieties. you will need to lacquer the skirting, or even varnish and prevent it from getting damp. you can still find traditional designs of skirting such as torus, bevelled, ogee and bullnose. however you are no longer limited to the standard designs as you can now find ribbed skirting, reeded skirting and even a jazz skirting that has been released! once you have the skirting sorted, you will want to put a nice floor down too. carpets are the standard throughout time, however laminate floors, engineered floors and solid wood floors are becoming more and more popular. engineered floors are a fraction of the cost of real wood flooring however they offer a great comparable finish. once the skirting boards and flooring have been laid, you may want to consider updating the stair rails and picture rails. oak and ash are usually the best hardwoods for these as they will generally get more wear and tear than your skirting boards.

you can normally fit your picture rails quite easily with a spirit level and adhesive. when fitting your stair rails however, you may like to have a professional carpenter visit to do them correctly. at this stage, you may also be considering your furniture. You can go for standard ‘fit the bill’ furniture that will fill the odd space with an occasional table, or a desk that will be useful. alternatively you can go for a higher end furniture that will often be made from solid oak and will give a look of elegance to any room.

whichever option you go for, the skirting boards will want to match your furniture and general interior design of your house. if you have chosen to go for mainly hardwood furniture then it would be most likely that hardwood skirting boards will give you the best result. you can always use mdf however without the need to go to great expense and still get a neat and tidy finish.
