Appliances: Out With The Old, In With The New

without comments

Does your kitchen need to be whipped in shape a bit? Then you should probably consider some new money-saving appliances to make it seem like a whole new place.

It won’t take you more than a few hours to rejuvenate your kitchen and add some color to it with some shiny new appliances.

However, a new and refreshing look for your kitchen is not the only reason you should consider renewing your appliances. Depending on how much energy they consume, you are most likely to get a rebate if you choose appliances that are Energy Star rated, and all as a result of the ‘cash for appliances’ program. The rebate program is federally funded with $300 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, but the rules vary by state.

It’s not a bad idea if you use an internet search engine to check which appliances are eligible for rebate in your state as well as the size of the rebate before you launch your new appliances buying campaign. The size of the rebate may be a fixed amount of approximately $50 to $200 per appliance as projected by the Department of Energy or a percentage of the cost.

Several states won’t be initiating the program until later in the year. In the state of Oklahoma, for instance, the launching is scheduled for April 22 and rebates will be limited to one per appliance and two per household. The state is also requiring that the old appliances be removed and properly disposed of, which is not a requirement nationwide. In several states, like Minnesota for instance, this program was initiated earlier this year and the funds allocated for it have already been exhausted.

The rebate funding may be an excellent way to soften the impact the remodeling of your kitchen will have on your budget, but it should not be a decisive factor. Rebate or no rebate, new appliances can be rewarding all by themselves.

Replacing your old appliances with the newer energy efficient ones will considerably reduce your monthly electricity expenses along with rejuvenating the appearance of your kitchen. Refrigerators, for example, are one of the biggest consumers of electricity that we own, behind heating and air, and a new model can lower your monthly bill.

Even though rebates in your state may be limited to refrigerators and dishwashers, it wouldn’t be a bad idea if you included a new stove which is around $600 more or less and can make a significant change in the appearance of your kitchen. Not to mention it takes less money and much less effort than installing new cabinets, walls or floors. Another advantage to replacing the appliances in your kitchen is that all you need to do is go to the store, buy them and arrange for their delivery, as opposed to an overall remodeling that implies days or even weeks of having a construction site in your home, not to mention the search for a competent contractor. In less than a day’s time and with no trouble at all you can have an entirely different kitchen, more modern, more elegant and better-performing.
