Explaining Electricians
Naturally, according to their name, electricians are people who work with electricity. Electricians are basically tradesmen who work on the electrical wiring of buildings, homes and any machines that utilise electricity. Electricians are extremely important in our every day lives, as they make sure the lifeblood of electricity can run through everything we utilise on a daily basis.
Lots of people confuse the terms electricians and electrical contractors. Whilst both will work on electricity, they are different. Electricians are individual tradesmen who sometimes work for themselves. Electrical contractors are companies that employ electricians to work for them. By doing this they have a large workforce that can be employed to work on large construction sites and in warehouses and the like. Depending on the country, some electricians are not allowed to work or be licensed unless they are working for an electrical contracting company.
Electricians will often use lots of tools in their trade. Working with electricity is dangerous, and some protective gear has to be worn to ensure no problems. Electricians will use pliers, wire strippers, cable cutters, multimeters, step bits and flashlights, amongst many other tools. Naturally, the electrician should be well qualified to make sure that he knows how to utilise all of these tools. The tools being used for the work will all rely on what is being done. Electrical contractors will often work on a construction site, when a new building is being put up. They will be involved in the blue prints of the building, to ensure that all the wiring will be put correctly in place. We should be eternally grateful to electricians, as we would be unable to watch TV, put the kettle on, cook or see at night… they are the reason why there are light switches and plug sockets and power supplies in all buildings.
Electricians do not come in one standardised form. There’ll be electricians who work solely on construction sites, solely on residential homes, solely on airplanes and solely in warehouses and factories. Most electricians who work for themselves and not for an electrical contracting company will be available to work on problems in the electrics of your house.
Usually it takes a long time to study to be an electrician. It’s a highly specialised and even dangerous field, and one must study all the practicalities of electricity and how it operates, and how to handle live electricity. An apprenticeship will invariably be a part of the electrician’s studies. This is the way in which the electrician can experience the field first hand, learn from an experienced electrician and also understand their industry more. With respect to the type of electrician the individual wants to be, they may have more or less training on their hands, and more years of studies.
An electrician will have to find a good electrical contracting company to employ them. Should they be lucky, they can get their foot in the door at a good electrical contractor whilst they do their apprenticeship.
